Why salespeople need to take care of their appearance

The way you dress has a proven and clear impact on how people see you, on your career and on your business success. There is an old saying that clothes make the man, but did you know that they also make business, careers, success? In this article, we will present several points connected to clothes and their  influence on business.

Dress for the job you want

They say that everyone should dress not for the job they have, but the job they want. This doesn't mean that you should come to work dressed as a fireman. According to Selling Power, it means that if you are trying to have a certain career development or reach a certain position, the way you dress should “precede” this dream position. Dressing up well has many other advantages as well.

A good appearance makes you seem trustworthy

First, you have to make a good impression on your clients. It doesn't mean you always have to wear a suit and a tie, but it does mean that you should have good quality clothes that fit you well and that don't look like you inherited them. You're actually asking clients to trust you and put a part of their life into your hands. However, someone who can't take care of themselves can't take care of someone else. So, first you have to start treating yourself well.

A second positive effect of dressing professionally is an improvement in your own mindset. If you are well-dressed, you are confident, which is necessary in sales.

Use colours – but don't overdo it

Don't forget about colours. According to studies, people tend to like colourful patterns, but nothing should be exaggerated. However, if you're dressed from head to toe in black or grey, you might seem too uninteresting or conservative – traits that don't really go well with a successful businessperson. Dress in an interesting way, but don't wear things that are too eye-catching and that steal attention away from what is important, i.e. what you're saying.

Wear clothes that fit you

Even if you are a little too heavy, or on the contrary your clothes “hang” on you, the only way of achieving maximum possible elegance is sticking firmly to one rule: wear clothes that fit you. Shirts, T-shirts, pants and blazers can't be too tight or too loose. Choose carefully and buy a smaller amount of quality clothing than large volumes of low-quality clothes. It's also good to invest some extra money into yourself and have your suits and blazers tailored. There's a really big difference, and you'll see an improvement in your confidence as well.
